Explicação
Conjugating regular verbs
Regular verbs (schwache Verben) follow a predictable pattern: stem + ending. The stem is the infinitive minus -en (or -n). Learning this pattern lets you conjugate hundreds of new verbs correctly.
| Person | Ending | wohnen (live) | lernen (learn) | spielen (play) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | wohne | lerne | spiele |
| du | -st | wohnst | lernst | spielst |
| er/sie/es | -t | wohnt | lernt | spielt |
| wir | -en | wohnen | lernen | spielen |
| ihr | -t | wohnt | lernt | spielt |
| sie/Sie | -en | wohnen | lernen | spielen |
Important special cases
| Rule | Example | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Stem ends in -t/-d | arbeiten → du arbeitest, er arbeitet | -e- inserted for pronunciation |
| Stem ends in -s/-ß/-z | heißen → du heißt (not heißst) | no double -s- in du form |
| Stem ends in -el | lächeln → ich lächle | stem -e- drops in ich form |
Common regular verbs
kaufen (buy), machen (do/make), fragen (ask), hören (hear/listen), sagen (say), brauchen (need), wohnen (live), kochen (cook), lernen (learn), spielen (play).
⚠️ Memory anchors: wir and sie/Sie always equal the infinitive (-en). The ich form never ends in -t. Know these two and you know 4 of the 6 forms already.
