Separable verbs (trennbare Verben)

Separable verbs consist of a prefix + base verb. In the present tense (main clause), the prefix splits off and moves to the end of the sentence. The prefix always carries the main stress in pronunciation.

Common separable prefixes

aus-	ausgehen	to go out	Wir gehen aus.
ein-	einkaufen	to shop	Sie kauft ein.
mit-	mitkommen	to come along	Kommst du mit?
zurück-	zurückkommen	to come back	Er kommt zurück.
an-	anfangen	to begin	Der Kurs fängt an.
vor-	vorstellen	to introduce	Ich stelle mich vor.

Usage rules

Context	Rule	Example
Present tense (main clause)	Prefix goes to end	Ich rufe dich an.
With modal verb	Separable verb stays together (infinitive) at end	Ich muss heute einkaufen.
Perfekt	ge- inserts between prefix and verb	Ich habe eingekauft.
Subordinate clause	Verb stays together at end	...weil ich heute einkaufe.

Inseparable prefixes (never split)

be-, ge-, er-, ver-, zer-, emp-, ent-, miss- never separate: bezahlen → Ich bezahle, verstehen → Ich verstehe.

⚠️ Ambiguous prefixes (über-, unter-, um-, durch-): some are separable, some not, depending on meaning.
