Verb Conjugation — Regular, Irregular and Separable
Explicação
This is the most important A1 topic. Articles, cases, tenses — everything later assumes you can conjugate. Come back here as often as you need.
1. How conjugation works
Every German verb has an infinitive ending in -en (or -n). Drop the -en to get the stem, then add the endings:
| Person | Ending | lernen |
|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | lerne |
| du | -st | lernst |
| er/sie/es | -t | lernt |
| wir | -en | lernen |
| ihr | -t | lernt |
| sie/Sie | -en | lernen |
If the stem ends in -t or -d, insert -e- for pronunciation: du arbeitest, er findet.
2. Irregular verbs
Irregular verbs change the stem vowel, and only in du and er/sie/es.
| Change | Verbs |
|---|---|
| e → i | sprechen (du sprichst) · essen · geben · helfen · nehmen · treffen |
| e → ie | lesen (du liest) · sehen · empfehlen |
| a → ä | fahren (du fährst) · schlafen · tragen · laufen · fallen · halten |
The vowel change happens only in du and er/sie/es: ich spreche · du sprichst · er spricht · wir sprechen.
3. sein and haben
| Person | sein (to be) | haben (to have) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | bin | habe |
| du | bist | hast |
| er/sie/es | ist | hat |
| wir | sind | haben |
| ihr | seid | habt |
| sie/Sie | sind | haben |
4. Separable verbs
Some verbs have a prefix that detaches and moves to the end of the sentence.
aufstehen → Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
| Prefix | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| auf- | aufstehen · aufhören | get up · stop |
| an- | anrufen · anfangen | call · begin |
| mit- | mitnehmen · mitkommen | take along · come along |
| ein- | einschlafen · einkaufen | fall asleep · shop |
| aus- | ausgehen · ausmachen | go out · switch off |
| zurück- | zurückkommen | come back |
The prefixes be-, er-, ver-, ent-, ge-, zer- never separate: Ich verstehe.
5. Verb position
| Position 1 | Position 2 | Rest |
|---|---|---|
| Ich | lerne | heute Deutsch. |
| Heute | lerne | ich Deutsch. |
| Deutsch | lerne | ich heute. |
⚠️ Common mistakes
✗ ich spriche · wir sprichen
✓ ich spreche · wir sprechen
The vowel changes only in du and er.
✗ Ich aufstehe um sieben Uhr.
✓ Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf.
The separable prefix goes to the end, not next to the verb.
✗ Heute ich lerne Deutsch.
✓ Heute lerne ich Deutsch.
If something else takes position 1, the subject moves behind the verb. The verb never leaves position 2.
🧠 Summary: regular = stem + endings · irregular = du and er change the vowel · separable = prefix to the end · inseparable = never splits · conjugated verb always position 2.
