Explicação
The Imperative in German
The imperative is used for commands, instructions, and requests. German has three imperative forms depending on who you are addressing: du (informal singular), ihr (informal plural), and Sie (formal).
| Form | How to form | lernen | kommen | sein |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| du | stem only (no -st) | Lern! | Komm! | Sei! |
| ihr | same as present tense | Lernt! | Kommt! | Seid! |
| Sie | infinitive + Sie | Lernen Sie! | Kommen Sie! | Seien Sie! |
Special rules
| Case | Rule | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stem ending in -t/-d | Add -e in du form | arbeiten → Arbeite! |
| Vowel-changing verbs (e→i/ie) | Keep the change | lesen → Lies! / geben → Gib! |
| Separable verbs | Prefix goes to end | aufmachen → Mach auf! |
Examples in context
| du | ihr | Sie |
|---|---|---|
| Komm her! | Kommt her! | Kommen Sie her! |
| Sei ruhig! | Seid ruhig! | Seien Sie ruhig! |
| Lies das Buch! | Lest das Buch! | Lesen Sie das Buch! |
⚠️ Common mistake: the du imperative never takes -st. Say Komm!, not Kommst!
