Explicação
Subordinate clauses with weil and dass
The conjunctions weil (because) and dass (that) introduce subordinate clauses where the conjugated verb moves to the end of the clause. This is one of German's fundamental word-order rules.
weil — because (reason)
| Main clause | Conj. | Subordinate clause |
|---|---|---|
| Ich lerne Deutsch, | weil | ich in Berlin arbeiten möchte. |
| Er bleibt zu Hause, | weil | er krank ist. |
| Sie kauft es nicht, | weil | es zu teuer ist. |
dass — that (content clause)
Used after verbs of saying, thinking, knowing, hoping.
| Main clause | Conj. | Subordinate clause |
|---|---|---|
| Ich glaube, | dass | er recht hat. |
| Er sagt, | dass | er morgen kommt. |
| Ich hoffe, | dass | das Wetter schön wird. |
With modals and Perfekt
Modal: modal goes last: ...weil er früh aufstehen muss.
Perfekt: auxiliary goes last: ...weil er krank gewesen ist.
⚠️ In spoken German, weil is sometimes used with V2 order — but this is non-standard. In writing, always put the verb at the end.
