Indirect Questions

Indirect questions (indirekte Fragen)

Indirect questions are questions embedded inside another sentence. The key difference from direct questions: the verb moves to the end of the subordinate clause, and no question mark if the main clause is a statement.

Indirect W-questions

The question word acts as a subordinating conjunction:

Direct question	Indirect question
Wo wohnt er?	Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt.
Wann kommt sie?	Kannst du mir sagen, wann sie kommt?
Was machst du?	Ich möchte wissen, was du machst.
Warum lernt er Deutsch?	Ich frage mich, warum er Deutsch lernt.

Yes/No indirect questions with ob

Direct question	Indirect with ob (whether)
Kommt er?	Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.
Hat sie Zeit?	Kannst du fragen, ob sie Zeit hat?
Ist das richtig?	Ich bin nicht sicher, ob das richtig ist.

Typical introducing phrases

Ich weiß nicht, ... / Kannst du mir sagen, ...? / Ich möchte wissen, ... / Weißt du, ...? / Ich frage mich, ...

⚠️ Most common error: keeping direct-question word order inside indirect questions. Say Ich weiß nicht, wo er wohnt — NOT Ich weiß nicht, wo wohnt er. In subordinate clauses, verb always goes last.
