Modal Verbs in the Past (Präteritum)

Explicação

How do you say "I had to", "I could", or "I wanted to" in German? Here's the rule that simplifies everything: modal verbs in the past almost never use Perfekt in speech. They use Präteritum — and it's the one exception you need to memorize.

The Core Rule

Modal in the past = Präteritum. Period.
Don't say "Ich habe gemusst" in speech — say "Ich musste". It's shorter, more natural, and what every native speaker does.

Präteritum of the 6 Modals

InfinitivePräteritum (ich/er)MeaningExample
müssenmusstehad to / needed toIch musste früh aufstehen.
könnenkonntecould / was able toEr konnte nicht schlafen.
wollenwolltewanted toSie wollte nach Wien fahren.
dürfendurftewas allowed toDu durftest nicht rauchen.
sollensolltewas supposed toIch sollte um 8 Uhr da sein.
mögenmochteliked (to)Er mochte keinen Kaffee.

Note: möchten has no Präteritum of its own — use wollte (intention) or mochte (preference) depending on context.

Full Conjugation — müssen as Model

Pattern: remove Umlaut from stem + -te + regular Präteritum endings

Perfekt vs Präteritum of Modals

SituationFormExample
Everyday speech (almost always)✓ PräteritumIch musste das machen.
Modal alone, formal writingPerfekt possibleEr hat das gewollt. (He wanted that.)
Modal + verb, speech❌ Perfekt sounds heavyIch habe das machen gemusst. ✗

Real Context Examples

"Gestern musste ich drei Stunden auf den Arzt warten."

(Yesterday I had to wait three hours for the doctor.)

"Als Kind durfte ich nicht fernsehen."

(As a child, I wasn't allowed to watch TV.)

"Sie wollte den Job, aber sie konnte nicht rechtzeitig kommen."

(She wanted the job, but she couldn't arrive on time.)

"Er sollte um 18 Uhr hier sein — es ist jetzt 20 Uhr."

(He was supposed to be here at 6 PM — it's now 8 PM.)

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKES

❌ "Ich habe müssen arbeiten." (Perfekt in speech)

✓ "Ich musste arbeiten."

Präteritum is the correct and natural form for modals in the past in speech. Native speakers avoid Perfekt with modals in everyday conversation.

❌ "Er müsste gestern arbeiten." (Konjunktiv II instead of Präteritum)

✓ "Er musste gestern arbeiten."

musste = he had to (real past fact). müsste = he should / would have to (unreal, hypothetical). Completely different!

🧠 REMEMBER:
Remove Umlaut + add -te:
müssen → musste | können → konnte | dürfen → durfte
wollen → wollte | sollen → sollte (no Umlaut, same pattern)

Modal in the past in speech = always Präteritum.
Perfekt with modals is for formal writing and only when used alone (no second verb).
