Negation: nicht vs kein

Explicação

"Ich habe nicht Zeit" — if you've ever said this, a native German speaker quietly cringed. It's not a pronunciation issue or complex grammar. It's the most common and jarring negation error non-native speakers make, and it has a one-rule fix.

The Core Rule

kein negates nouns with an indefinite article or no article. nicht negates everything else.

Use kein when...PositiveNegation
No article (general concept)Ich habe Zeit.Ich habe keine Zeit.
Indefinite article (ein/eine)Das ist ein Problem.Das ist kein Problem.
Plural without articleIch habe Freunde.Ich habe keine Freunde.
Use nicht when...Example
Negating a verb (action)Er kommt nicht. / Ich arbeite nicht.
Negating an adjectiveDas ist nicht schön.
Negating an adverbEr kommt nicht heute, sondern morgen.
Negating noun with definite articleDas ist nicht der Lehrer.

Position of "nicht"

What nicht negatesPositionExample
The whole predicateEnd of clauseEr kommt nicht.
A specific elementBefore that elementEr kommt nicht heute.
Predicative adjectiveBefore adjectiveDas ist nicht schlecht.

"Ich habe leider keine Zeit — der Chef hat schon wieder Überstunden angeordnet."

(Unfortunately I have no time — the boss ordered overtime again.) — "Zeit" without article → keine ✓

"Das war kein Fehler — das war eine Katastrophe."

(That wasn't a mistake — that was a catastrophe.) — kein because "ein Fehler" in the positive.

"Er kommt nicht heute, sondern erst morgen."

(He's not coming today, but only tomorrow.) — nicht before the specific negated element.

⚠️ COMMON MISTAKES

❌ "Ich habe nicht Zeit."

✓ "Ich habe keine Zeit."

"Zeit" without an article takes kein. "Nicht Zeit" sounds like a 4-year-old learning German. This is the #1 negation error.

❌ "Das ist nicht ein Problem."

✓ "Das ist kein Problem."

If the positive has "ein", the negative uses "kein" — not "nicht ein". Kein already contains the negation.

🧠 REMEMBER: Quick test: "Would I use 'ein' or no article in the positive?" Yes → kein. No → nicht.
• Ich habe Zeit → keine Zeit ✓ | Das ist ein Fehler → kein Fehler ✓ | Er kommt → kommt nicht ✓
