Participial Attributes
Explicação
Extended participial attributes (Partizipialattribute)
A participial attribute is an expanded participial phrase that modifies a noun, replacing a relative clause. Highly typical of formal written German, it allows dense, compact expression. In English, it usually corresponds to a relative clause or a reduced relative clause.
Two types of participle as attribute
| Type | Formation | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Partizip I (-end) | infinitive + -d | simultaneous, active | das weinende Kind (the crying child) |
| Partizip II | regular Partizip II | completed or passive | das gebaute Haus (the built house) |
Extended participial attributes
The participial attribute can be expanded with complements — all placed before the noun (between article and noun):
| Relative clause | Participial attribute |
|---|---|
| das Kind, das weint | das weinende Kind |
| das Haus, das neu gebaut wurde | das neu gebaute Haus |
| der Brief, der gestern geschrieben wurde | der gestern geschriebene Brief |
| die Lösung, die von Experten empfohlen wird | die von Experten empfohlene Lösung |
Position and declension
The entire participial phrase sits between the article and the noun. The participle takes adjective endings: Der [seit Jahren diskutierte] Vorschlag wurde abgelehnt.
⚠️ This construction is a hallmark of formal written German. In speech, relative clauses are almost always used instead. When reading academic or journalistic texts, practice locating the head noun and peeling back the participial attribute to the left.
