Semantic Fields
Explicação
Semantic fields (Wortfelder)
A semantic field (Wortfeld) is a group of words belonging to the same conceptual domain — sharing a theme or subject area. Unlike word families (shared root), words in a semantic field may have completely different roots but are united by meaning.
Example: semantic field of "work"
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Verbs | arbeiten, anstellen, entlassen, kündigen, bewerben, verdienen |
| Nouns - people | der Arbeitnehmer, Arbeitgeber, Chef, Kollege, Bewerber |
| Nouns - places | das Büro, der Arbeitsplatz, die Fabrik, das Unternehmen |
| Adjectives | festangestellt, freiberuflich, befristet, qualifiziert |
Example: semantic field of "communication"
| Category | Words |
|---|---|
| Verbs | sprechen, sagen, erzählen, berichten, erklären, diskutieren, flüstern |
| Nouns | das Gespräch, die Diskussion, das Argument, die Aussage, der Dialog |
| Adjectives | mündlich, schriftlich, deutlich, verständlich, zweideutig |
Why work with semantic fields?
Learning vocabulary in semantic clusters is more effective: words are learned with context and relationships, it's easier to activate the right word in communication, nuances and register differences become visible, and it improves expressive precision.
⚠️ Semantic field vs. word family: sprechen, sagen, erzählen, reden share the same field (verbal communication) but different roots. Sprechen, Sprache, sprachlich, Gespräch share the same root (word family).
