C1

Modal Particles in Written Text

💡Not sure what Nominativ or Akkusativ means?Word Functions

Explicação

At B1 you met doch, ja and mal as flavouring in speech. In writing they are not flavouring: they carry the author's stance. Ignoring them at C1 loses exactly the layer being tested.

In text, a modal particle signals what the author presupposes you already accept — that is where an argument is built or attacked without being stated.

ParticleSignalsExample
dochcontradicts an assumptionDas ist doch bekannt.
jashared presuppositionDas ist ja der Punkt.
wohlprobable assumptionDas dürfte wohl kaum möglich sein.
eigentlichreservationDas wäre eigentlich zu bedenken.
zwar … aberconcede then turnDas ist zwar interessant, aber

⚠️ Watch out

✗ Reading "Das ist ja bekannt" as neutral information

✓ Reading it as "everyone knows this — and you should too"

ja marks what the author treats as settled, often precisely what he does not want questioned.

🧠 doch contradicts · ja presupposes · wohl assumes · eigentlich qualifies.

Exemplos

This is, after all, the decisive point of the discussion.

  • Das dürfte wohl kaum zu realisieren sein.

    That would hardly be feasible.

  • Das ist zwar verständlich, eigentlich aber problematisch.
