Verbs with Preposition — Use 3 (two subjects + dass-clause)
Explicação
Verbs with prepositions + dass-clause
Many German verbs require a specific preposition for their complements. When this complement is a clause (with dass or an infinitive), the preposition combines with da(r)- to form a Pronominaladverb (darauf, daran, damit, etc.) that points forward to the subordinate clause.
Structure: verb + prep. → da(r)- + prep. + dass-clause
| Verb + prep. | Pronominaladverb | Example |
|---|---|---|
| warten auf (Akk.) | darauf | Ich warte darauf, dass er kommt. |
| sich freuen über (Akk.) | darüber | Ich freue mich darüber, dass du da bist. |
| sich erinnern an (Akk.) | daran | Ich erinnere mich daran, dass wir uns kennen. |
| bestehen auf (Dat.) | darauf | Er besteht darauf, dass wir pünktlich sind. |
| denken an (Akk.) | daran | Ich denke daran, dass ich morgen fliege. |
When da(r)- can be omitted
In informal/colloquial speech, the Pronominaladverb can be dropped with verbs of thinking/feeling: Ich freue mich, dass du da bist.
Alternative with zu + infinitive (same subject)
When main clause and complement have the same subject: Ich freue mich darüber, dich zu sehen. / Ich warte darauf, nach Hause zu fahren.
⚠️ Very common error: placing the preposition directly before dass — impossible in German. Never say Ich warte auf dass er kommt. Say Ich warte darauf, dass er kommt.
